Abstract

Difficulties in translating literary texts are determined by both linguistic untranslatability (differences between the source and target languages) and cultural untranslatability (differences between the source and target cultures). Examples of linguistic untranslatability would be idioms, puns, intertextual allusions, colloquial words, Russianisms, salutations. The elements of cultural untranslatability are toponyms, anthroponyms, names of habits and customs, names of national dishes, realia. The article focuses on the study of the difficulties and strategies of translation from Romanian into French of the work Greetings from Trotsky by Dumitru Crudu. The tendency of the Republic of Moldova to promote national culture also implies the promotion of national literature and the writers who are part of it. Dumitru Crudu’s fame in the international arena proves the current demand to analyse the way his works have been translated and to determine their relevance. This study highlights the creativity of both the author and the translator when choosing equivalents. Most of the problems a translator may face are also rooted in socio-cultural connotations. Translation is a process of intercultural communication, a mediator between two cultures that transmits a great deal of the culture of the Other. This observation leads us to rethink the role of socio- cultural elements in the translation of Dumitru Crudu’s Greetings from Trotsky. According to Eugen Coseriu, translation is a complex process rather than a simple linguistic transfer between two languages. Through translation we try to express the same textual content in different languages. Translating means creating for the readers an “equivalent” of the original work, i.e., a work distorting the content of the original version as little as possible. The translator must be able to maintain a balance between the source text and the target text, allowing the message to be interpreted correctly.
