Abstract

Abstract: The main objective of this study is to address the translation of cultural elements and transformations made during the transfer from one language / culture into another. Translation is not just a transfer between two languages, but also between two cultures. Audiovisual translation aims to help the viewer overcome linguistic and cultural barriers. The greatest difficulty is not the words for which we cannot find suitable equivalents, but the realities to which they refer. The translated text is the equivalent of the original text only when both texts have the same connotative meanings in the source language and the target language. The receiver of the translation is aware of the fact that the translated text refers to a foreign cultural reality. However, in the translation of films the possibilities of applying explanatory techniques are limited due to the constraints of subtitling. The success of the translated version does not depend only on the linguistic context, but also on something outside of the text that we call information about the world, or encyclopedic information. Cultural references are present not only in characters’ speech, but also in the image. The image can contribute to comprehension of the cultural elements. Transfer of cultural elements and their comprehension in audiovisual translation can take place at the verbal + non-verbal (visual, acoustic) levels. The receiver will have no problems in understanding certain cultural elements if they are visible on the screen. Therefore, we intend to analyze this phenomenon on the basis of a corpus of examples extracted from the comedy „Rien à declarer”, which is subtitled in Romanian.
