Abstract

The work on machine translation program began in the 50’s of the 20th century. In 1951 American State Government donated 20 million dollars to promote machine translation research and practice. The first International conference on machine translation was held in 1956 with the participation of delegates from USA, France, UK and USSR. The work on the machine translation (MT) launched in the same period in Japan.

The first Georgian machine translation team was formed in 1957 under the guidance of Prof. Eliashvili at the Georgian National Academy of Sciences. In pursuit of academic goals the first algorithm was created to translate from Russion into Georgian. Initially, the military texts were translated by means of machine translation, that was due to the cold war period and to the great extent it secured the confidential military information.

Bluth, MT specialist, points out three main occasions of application of the computerized technologies in reference to the translation process: 1. Providing additional machine tools for translators 2. Translating with the co-participation of machine. 3. Pure machine translation.

The conference paper aims at analyzing the modern challenges of application of MT programs and computerized technologies related to the translation process to respond to the question of their target application as the additional sources in reference to literary and specialized tranlsations.
