Abstract

The transition from the concept of translation equivalence to that of functional adequacy represents a significant advancement
in the field of translation. Traditionally, translation equivalence focused on faithfully reproducing the meaning and form of the
source text in the target language. However, this approach has proven to be limited because it often neglects cultural, linguistic
and contextual disparities between the source and target languages. Conversely, functional adaptation focuses on the main objective of translation, which is to render the text accessible and understandable to the target audience, while considering the cultural context and linguistic norms of the target community. Thus, the translation process is perceived as a cultural transfer, wherein the translator acts as a mediator between two distinct cultures. This process implies a comprehensive understanding of the cultural, social and historical contexts of both the source and target texts. Consequently, the translator assumes the role of a cultural negotiator, striving to strike a balance between faithfulness to the original text and comprehensibility and acceptability within the target context. This paper aims to identify the specific realia of Italian culture that are embedded in Giulia Caminito’s novel L’acqua del lago non è mai dolce and analyze the techniques and strategies employed for their translation into Romanian in version proposed by the translator
