Abstract

Abstract: The following paper puts under discussion the social concept of shame in the English, Romanian and Russian languages, also it takes into consideration the two types of cultures: those of the individualistic one (English and American) and those of the collectivistic type (Romanian, Moldovan and Russian). Intercultural studies have recently acquired a great popularity; they allow us to understand all the smallest peculiarities of people’s mentality. This fact helps in conducting a qualitative intercultural communication, which emphasizes the topicality of this research theme in the context of globalization.

In this context we successfully integrate the research methods using in this paper, which are those of cognitive linguistics, suggested and applied by the famous cognitivists such as George Lakoff and Anna Wierzbicka. The methods include the cognitive scenario and the image schema described by means of the Natural Semantic Metalanguage found in all the languages.

Corpus linguistics is composed of aphorisms that contain the lexeme shame in the three mentioned languages and also their synonyms, the aphorisms written by the modern and classical English, American, Romanian, Moldovan and Russian writers.
