Problèmes de traduction d’éléments culturels (À l’exemple de la traduction du livre autobiographique de Tatiana Mouromzeff- Saarbekova À la recherche de ma Russie)

Abstract

The transmission of culture is part of the tasks of the translator who has the objective of making a work/author known to
a foreign reader. Cultural elements are linked to the source culture and are likely to cause translation problems. These include proper 51 names, names and expressions related to the political regime, traditions and habits, the education system, references to history and art, etc. Things get complicated when the author’s arrival culture ultimately becomes the departure culture. Can we consider him as a bicultural author? What are the translation complications of an author who is neither a writer nor a researcher but who had the audacity to take up his pen to relate the turbulent history of his famous family through the Russian Revolution and the Stalinist purges? What types of approaches does the translator have to adopt against untranslatability in order to adapt to the reader of the target language? Finally, what is the purpose of the cultural translation of this type of autobiographical story?
