Abstract

The article deals with the literary space of the Marguerite Duras’s novel “The Vice-Consul”, which is distinguished among the author’s works by peculiar symbolism and poetic nature. By combining spatial and temporal signs, Duras endowers the narrative specific form and expressive nuances, turning her novels into the excellent samples of postmodernist prose. The aim of the article is to introduce the reader to the significance of the Durasian all- embracing space together with the Georgian translations as well as to attempt to show the author’s original and innovative approaches. In Duras’s artistic discourse, it is extremely interesting to analyze the toponyms that carry a conceptual loading. Toponyms are sometimes real geographical names, sometimes fictional ones, and often reflect the spiritual condition of the characters. Invented or borrowed, Duras’s toponyms create a specific onomatopoeia and render poetic style to the texts. The writer experiences the influence of the Eastern and Asian space, which is related to the period of her childhood.

Orientation-losing space that is omnipresent, constant moving that sometimes helps us find geographical and temporal signs, sometimes causes to lose them, reiterated chronotope of the road as a search for identity, foreign-sounding toponyms that make the text poetic, décor loaded with symbols – such is the literary space of Marguerite Duras, which we have tried to show in through the texts translated into Georgian.
