Trasee traversabile şi ne-traversabile în expresiile de mişcare fictivă din limba romănă

Abstract

Abstract: This article analyses ways of expressing fictive motion in English and Romanian particularly with respect to the level of their susceptibility to such a pertinent criterion (reported by Matsumoto) as the characteristic of the grammatical subjects of Fictive Motion Expressions (FMEs) to be travelable (eg. roads, paths, etc) or non- travelable (eg. walls, fences etc.) paths. Based on the comparison of the Romanian translation of an English novel, the study aims to disclose the level of similarities or the eventual typological limitations (not just related to the translator’s preferences) of the languages in using FME, as well as to analyze the effects the differences in conceptualization of the situation in the original and its re-conceptualization in the translation would have upon the reader, given the specificity of the narrative text. The paper concludes with a discussion of the findings and directions of future research.
