Abstract

The paper discusses the role of the German Empire in the historical events in Abkhazia in 1918. Germany played a decisive role in belonging Abkhazia to Georgian sovereignty firstly by the German- Georgian Treaty of the 28th of May, 1918 and secondly by supporting the Georgian cause during the negotiations with Ottomans. Besides during the presence of the German expedition in Georgia German units were always active in Sokhumi, Ochamchire and other Abkhazian towns to bolster up Georgian military providing an assault westwards in direction to Sochi and Tuapse. The standpoint of the German Empire greatly influenced the integration of Abkhazia within the Republic of Georgia during its years of independence.
